Swimming pool cleaning and maintenance

What Happens When You Ignore Pool Maintenance

You’ve probably heard of swimming pools that stood neglected for a long time because their owners moved away or just didn’t maintain them. The thing that you probably remember is turbid, malodorous, greenish-black water that became a breeding area for mosquitoes. Here are some other things that happen to a swimming pool if its maintenance is ignored.

Algae and Bacteria Take Over

For swimming pool water to be usable, chemicals need to be carefully applied, and pumps and filters need to work. When chemical treatment is neglected, and pumps and filters aren’t kept up, algae, bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms proliferate. Some of these microorganisms, such as E. coli, are dangerous to health. This is especially true for young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Even if a pool full of algae and bacteria isn’t unhealthy, it is repulsive to behold.

Incorrect pH Levels

The pH level of pool water should be slightly alkaline with a pH of around 7.2. Levels much higher or much lower than that create health hazards. A very low pH means that the water is basically an acid, and swimming in it can burn the skin and mucous membranes. A pH level that’s too high invites pathogens and algae.

Damaged Equipment

Neglecting to balance the chemistry in pool water also destroys the pool’s equipment. Acidic water eats away at metal, while overly alkaline water leads to lime scale, a crust of minerals that makes a pool’s equipment less efficient. If your pool has a heater, it is especially susceptible to lime scale, which can build up until the heater fails. Lime scale, algae and other debris can also invade your pool’s plumbing pipes and ruin them.

Failed Filters and Pumps

Mats of algae and bacteria not only make a pool dangerous to swim in but can also foul your pool’s skimmers and filters. This puts a strain on your pump and shortens its working life. When your pool equipment fails, it can be very expensive to repair or replace. Failing electrical equipment also raises your energy bills.

Pest Breeding Area

Besides being dangerous to swim in and repellent to the senses, a neglected pool is a perfect breeding area for pests such as mosquitoes. Stagnant water is ideal for mosquito reproduction, and many mosquitoes are vectors for dangerous diseases. Mosquitoes also attract predators such as frogs and other insects. These creatures leave their own filth behind in the pool as they search for and eat mosquitoes.

Lower Property Values

Though your pool is probably in your backyard and doesn’t affect curb appeal, a neglected pool still lowers the value and appeal of your property. Prospective buyers will pass on a property that has a dirty swimming pool. When you need pool maintenance services in Torrington, CT, contact Hydrocare.
