Pool Opening Basics for Inground Pools

Opening an inground pool can feel like a huge undertaking. However, with a clear plan, it’s completely manageable. Doing it properly ensures your pool stays clean, safe, and fully functional throughout the season.

Remove and Store the Winter Cover

Start by removing the pool cover. Brush off any debris before folding it up for storage. Try to avoid dragging it across rough surfaces to prevent tears. Store it in a dry, shaded area so it lasts through multiple seasons. A clean, well-kept cover also reduces the risk of introducing dirt or leaves back into your pool.

Inspect Your Pool Equipment

Inspect all equipment, including pumps, filters, heaters, and hoses. Look for cracks, leaks, and loose fittings. Winter can be tough on pool systems, so catching small problems now can save you time and money. Also, tighten all connections and replace any worn parts before restarting your pool.

Reinstall Ladders, Skimmers and Other Accessories

If you removed ladders, skimmers, and other accessories during the offseason, now’s the time to reinstall them. Make sure all bolts and fittings are properly secured. Safety is key, so double-check that everything is stable before anyone uses the pool, especially the ladder and diving board.

Clean the Pool Thoroughly

Remove leaves, sticks, and any debris from the water and pool floor. Be sure to brush the walls and floor to prevent algae buildup. Using a pool vacuum can also help remove stubborn sediment.

Refill and Balance the Water

Top off your pool with fresh water to the proper level. Always use a high-quality test kit to check the pH, alkaline, and sanitizer levels, adjusting as needed. Keeping your pool’s water properly balanced protects pool equipment, prevents algae growth, and creates a comfortable swimming experience.

Start the Pump and Filter

Once the water is balanced, turn on your pump and filter the water. Run the system for at least 24–48 hours to circulate the chemicals and clear any debris. Be on the lookout for leaks or unusual noises while the system is running. A properly functioning pump and filter will keep your pool clean and safe all season long.

Conduct a Safety Check

Inspect gates, fences, pool alarms, and any life-saving devices to ensure they’re fully functional. Safety should always come first, especially if children or pets will be near the pool. Having a strategy for opening your pool carefully sets you up for a worry-free swimming season. If you’re not sure about equipment checks, water balancing, or general maintenance, reaching out to a pool professional can be helpful.
